While the final score read 75-58, the game had a very tense feel throughout and it was not until about the lead ballooned to 20 with only a few minutes left that the Oxford faithful could breathe easy. Big performances by point guard Alex Ordu and forward Samuel Kim helped the Eagles hand the Titans their first loss. Ordu had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists and Kim recorded another double-double for the Eagles, contributing 13 points and 14 rebounds. However, Eagles head coach Roderick Stubbs saw it as a battle on the boards more than anything else.

“This was a total team effort, as we defeated a very good Middle Georgia Technical College team tonight. Our goal was to work hard on the boards and limit their second shots and we did a great job of that tonight.” By holding the rebounding numbers to near even (42-40) and evening out in second chance points, Oxford was able to break the game wide open at the start of the second half following a 30-27 deficit at the half. This was extremely important to the overall course of the game because of the fact that MGTC outrebounded Oxford in their earlier season match-up by 20 rebounds and thus were able to handle the Eagles quite effectively. However, Tuesday night the Eagles surged on a 16-0 run at the beginning of the second half courtesy of some great shooting by both Kim and freshman guard Zachary Lynn, who tallied 13 points overall. The Eagles’ lead was never cut down to single digits from then onwards as they outscored MGTC by a score of 48-28 in the second half.

Throughout the game there were a slew of controversial calls made and it was clear that many players were frustrated by what they deemed to be lackluster officiating. Tensions were heightened by the importance of the game. With the Titans sitting atop the GCAA Division 3 JV conference at 6-0 coming into the game, the Eagles knew the game was as close to a must-win as they had that season. The 17-point victory increased the Eagles to 16-8 on the season and 4-2 in the conference. The Titans fell to 6-1 in the conference on the season. The upcoming Dennis Spruell Basketball Classic, which will be played on February 10th and 11th respectively, will be held in Oxford’s Williams Gymnasium and should prove to be extremely important in the Eagles’ quest to rise to the top of the conference.
